In our family we are excited about baseball all year long. My husband built a batting cage in our basement so that our favorite sport can be played during all four seasons. Though once the snow starts to melt and the feel of Spring is in the air we are ready to go cheer for our favorite team: The Vermont Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers organization is a non-profit and has over 150 dedicated volunteers. It takes 30+ volunteers each game to help things run smoothly and efficiently. The organization is a member of the nationally recognized New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). They travel to and play in all six New England states each year. The Mountaineers recruit players from the top US collegiate baseball programs.
In the last ten years the Mountaineers have been in four NECBL championship series and have won the Fay Vincent Championship trophy twice.
There are an average of 1400 fans at each home game. While being the smallest market in the NECBL, this organization averages in the top three for attendance every year.
Our family has been going to the ball park for the last 5 years. My son seems to remember each game that we have gone to. He loves the hot dogs (what six year old doesn’t?), he loves looking out for and running into Skip, he loves the fun events (such as giveaways, games to play, entertainers), and of course he loves the baseball! “Real ball”…. way beyond tball and what we play at home. It’s live, it’s exciting, and it’s great fun.
Dianne Meehan, who sits on the board of the Mountaineers, tell us about the organization gives back: “The VT Mountaineers’ organization takes its responsibility to give back to the local community seriously. While we lease the historic Montpelier Recreation Field to play our home games, we have made over $550,000 worth of improvements to the facility for all residents to use. Annually we also donate thousands of dollars of goods and services to youth groups, schools, community action programs and fellow non-profits. During the season, charities are also given the opportunity to raise money at the park through our 50/50 program.”
